Engage:
vt. 使忙碌, 雇佣, 预定, 使从事于, 使参加
vi.答应, 从事, 交战, [机]接合, 啮合

Example:
1. 雇用，聘用： engage a new secretary / She was engaged as an interpreter
2. 占用; 吸引： Nothing engages his attention for long. / : I can't come to dinner on Tuesday; I'm otherwise engaged.
3. 预订: engage a room (see book)
4. 订婚: engagement ring (订婚戒指)
5. 赢得，吸引住: His smile engages everyone he meets.
6. 参加：使加入；使卷入其中: engage a shy person in conversation.
7. 冲突：进入或导致与…交战: We have engaged the enemy. (我们已经与敌人交战)
8. 连结，接合；啮合: The two cog-wheels engaged and the machine started.
9. 允诺; 答应; 保证: a lawyer engaged to undertake the sale of the house immediately.
